The Bampton Shirt Race, organized by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Junketing (SPAJERS), is a historic annual charity event in Bampton, Oxfordshire, that has been held since 1953 to raise funds for elderly residents in Bampton and Lew.

The Shirt Race has been run almost every year since 1953. It is a 'chariot' race (inc. fancy dress) run along a route to include drink stops by the historic pubs in Bampton.

If you live along this route be aware that there will be some potencial impact for you on the day of the event. Below is a map of this year's route marked with green arrows; road closures marked in blue (5pm to 8pm) & red (6pm to 7pm). Some, or all, of the following may affect you:

  • Road closures and diversions will be taking place from 5pm and continue until 8pm.
  • Parking restrictions will be in place from midday - NB: some extra parking will be available at Bampton Recreation Ground on Buckland Road, OX18 2AA.
  • If you live directly on the route of the race then we recommend that you do not park on the road on any part of the designated route since 'chariots' will be pushed along the route at speed.

Businesses - Please be aware that this event is taking place and there is likely to be an impact on your business between midday (parking restrictions start in Market Square) and 8pm when the road closures finish.

We hope that you will be able to enjoy the SPAJERS Shirt Race, a long standing, community event and we apologise for any inconvenience you may encounter on the day.
