Bampton Flood Prevention Plan
Bampton experienced its worst flooding since 2007 on November 25th last year, leaving many areas badly affected.
Since then, the Parish Council has been working actively to find long-term solutions.
We have walked the routes taken by the floodwaters, investigated the flow of water from Brize Meadows in the north, through to Alvescot in the west, and as far as Aston and Cote in the east. We have also engaged with Brize Norton Airbase and taken an active role in the Bampton & District Flood Prevention Group, chaired by the highly experienced Keith Glazier.
In recent months, we applied for and successfully secured funding from Oxfordshire County Council to address the flooding problems in Bampton. Our first step has been to appoint Water Resource Associates (WRA), specialist flood consultants, to conduct a full review of Bampton and the surrounding area and recommend measures to help reduce the risk of future flooding.
The focus of their study will be on the two areas most affected: Mill Green and Fishers Bridge. WRA may also approach residents directly for their observations on what happened and where, as local knowledge will form an important part of their investigation.
The WRA survey is scheduled to begin in September and will include a drone assessment of the area, carried out with approval and cooperation from Brize Norton Airbase. Once their recommendations are complete, the remaining funds will be used to implement practical measures to address the issues identified.
In the meantime, we ask all residents to help by ensuring that drains, culverts, and ditches around their properties are kept as clear as possible. Every small effort makes a difference, and by being proactive together, we can help reduce the risk of flooding in our community.
